Common Questions
Frequently Asked Pet Questions
How much does a 55-gallon fish tank weigh when full? +
A full 55-gallon aquarium weighs approximately 625 to 700 lbs, depending on glass thickness, substrate, and decorations. Water alone weighs 8.34 lbs per gallon (55 × 8.34 = 458 lbs), plus the empty tank (around 100 lbs), plus gravel and decor. The aquarium weight calculator breaks this down precisely. Most standard residential floors are rated for 40 to 50 lbs per square foot; a 55-gallon tank resting on 4 square feet puts 150+ lbs/sq ft on that spot, often requiring a reinforced stand positioned over a load-bearing wall or floor joist.
Is the “multiply by 7” rule for dog age accurate? +
No. The “one dog year equals seven human years” rule is widely used but scientifically inaccurate. A 2020 PNAS study using DNA methylation data found that dog aging follows a logarithmic curve, not a linear one. A 1-year-old dog is developmentally equivalent to a 31-year-old human. By age 5, a dog is roughly equivalent to a 57-year-old human. Beyond that, the rate slows. The calculation also varies by breed size: small dogs live longer and age more slowly in later years than large and giant breeds. Our dog age calculator uses the AKC-endorsed breed size formula to give an accurate result.
My dog ate chocolate — what should I do? +
Use the chocolate toxicity calculator immediately with your dog’s weight and the type and amount of chocolate consumed. Dark chocolate and baking chocolate are far more dangerous than milk chocolate because they contain more theobromine per ounce. If the calculator indicates moderate or severe risk, call your veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (888-426-4435) immediately. Do not wait for symptoms to appear — early intervention, including induced vomiting if done promptly, is far more effective than treating symptoms that have already developed.
How many litter boxes do I need for two cats? +
The standard veterinary recommendation is n+1: one more litter box than the number of cats. For two cats, that means three litter boxes. The n+1 rule ensures that each cat always has access to a clean box even if one is in use or has been recently soiled. Additionally, the litter box should be at least 1.5 times the length of your cat’s body from nose to tail base. Most commercial litter boxes are too small for large cats. The litter box size calculator helps you determine the right dimensions based on your cat’s size.
What is the BARF diet for dogs and how much do I feed? +
BARF stands for Biologically Appropriate Raw Food (or Bones and Raw Food). A typical adult maintenance portion is 2 to 3 percent of the dog’s body weight per day, split into two meals. Puppies need 5 to 6 percent of their current body weight (not adult weight). High-activity and working dogs may need up to 3.5 percent. The prey model ratio typically targets 80% muscle meat, 10% raw meaty bones, 5% liver, and 5% other secreting organs. The raw dog food calculator gives you the exact daily grams based on your dog’s weight, age, and activity level.
How do I calculate how many gallons my aquarium holds? +
For a rectangular tank: multiply length × width × height in inches, then divide by 231 (the number of cubic inches in one US gallon). For a 48 × 12 × 18 inch tank: 48 × 12 × 18 = 10,368 cubic inches ÷ 231 = 44.9 gallons. Note that actual usable volume is less because you should not fill a tank to the very top, and substrate displaces water. The aquarium volume calculator handles rectangular, bowfront, and hexagonal shapes and shows both gross and net usable volume.
