What is BMI (Body Mass Index)? Body Mass Index (BMI) is a number calculated from a person’s weight and height using the formula: BMI equals weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared (or weight in pounds multiplied by 703, divided by height in inches squared). The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) defines the following BMI categories for US adults: underweight (below 18.5), healthy weight (18.5 to 24.9), overweight (25.0 to 29.9), and obese (30.0 and above). The standard adult BMI formula was designed for adults aged 20 and older and produces a single number that applies equally regardless of age within that range. For amputees, standard BMI significantly overestimates leanness because the formula uses the patient’s reduced post-amputation body weight without accounting for the weight of the missing limb. How BMI Differs from Body Fat Percentage

BMI is calculated from height and weight alone, meaning it cannot distinguish between muscle and fat mass. A competitive weightlifter with very low body fat may have a BMI in the overweight range simply because muscle is dense and weighs more than fat per unit of volume. Conversely, a person with normal BMI but low muscle mass may carry a higher body fat percentage than their BMI suggests. What is TDEE (Total Daily Energy Expenditure)?
