Bricks and Mortar Together — Why Every Other Brick Calculator Gets This Wrong

The standard brick calculator online gives you a brick count, and that is all. You go to the home improvement store, buy 851 bricks for your 20×6 ft wall, and on the way out the door realize you forgot the mortar. For 851 bricks at one bag per 30, that is 29 bags of 60 lb Type S mortar that you left behind. This is not a small oversight — 29 bags weigh 1,740 pounds and you will need a second trip. Our calculator shows bricks and mortar bags in the same result so you order both materials at once.

The other thing almost every brick calculator misses is the bond pattern. Running bond — every brick a stretcher (long side facing out, stacked so each joint falls at the midpoint of the brick below) — is the standard US residential pattern and the most efficient in terms of cuts. English bond alternates full courses of stretchers with full courses of headers (bricks placed perpendicular to the wall, their short end visible). Flemish bond alternates a stretcher and a header within each course. Both English and Flemish bonds require more cuts, more mortar, and more labor. The waste factor difference is real: running bond needs 5% extra, English bond 8%, Flemish bond 10%. On a 120-sq-ft wall, that difference is 41 extra bricks between running and Flemish bond.

Wall area equals length times height in feet. Standard modular bricks with 3/8-inch mortar joints cover 6.75 bricks per square foot (unit height = 2.625 inches, unit length = 8 inches: 144 sq in / (2.625 x 8) = 6.86, rounded to industry standard 6.75). Brick count = wall area x bricks per sq ft x waste factor (running bond 1.05, English 1.08, Flemish 1.10). Mortar = brick count / 30 (industry standard for face shell bedding, 60 lb Type S). Wet Your Bricks Before Laying — Especially in Summer

Standard clay face brick is porous. A dry brick placed against fresh mortar will immediately draw water out of the mortar mix, preventing the proper hydration reaction from taking place and producing a bond that is weaker than it should be. The standard test is the Initial Rate of Absorption (IRA) — bricks with an IRA above 30 grams of water per minute per 30 square inches (the ASTM C67 test threshold) must be pre-dampened before laying. A practical field test: place a brick face-down in half an inch of water for 60 seconds. If the water is visibly absorbed, the brick needs wetting before use. In hot, dry conditions (common in Texas, the Southwest, and summer months across the South), this is critical even for lower-absorption bricks. Dampen the bricks to a surface-saturated condition — damp but not dripping — immediately before laying.

Use a Story Pole to Keep Courses Consistent From Start to Finish

A story pole is a straight board marked at every course height (2.625 inches for standard modular brick with 3/8-inch joints) from the bottom course up to the final course. Before you lay the first brick, cut your story pole to the finished wall height with all the course marks on it. Set the story pole at each end of the wall and at every 8 to 10 feet of length. As you build, check each course against the story pole at multiple points to ensure the mortar joint is consistent. Without a story pole, mortar joints tend to drift — 1/4-inch joints at the bottom become 1/2-inch joints at the top, and the wall ends up both taller than planned and visually inconsistent. The story pole keeps you on track without constant measuring.

Protect Fresh Mortar From Rain, Direct Sun, and Freezing Temperatures

Fresh brick mortar is vulnerable for the first 48 to 72 hours of curing. Rain can wash uncured mortar out of joints before the initial set, leaving voids that allow water infiltration. Direct summer sun rapidly dries the mortar surface while the interior remains wet, creating surface cracking. Freezing temperatures stop the hydration reaction entirely and can cause fresh mortar to fail by ice crystal formation. Protect fresh work with polyethylene sheeting or burlap at night and during rain. In hot weather, cover the wall with damp burlap and mist it throughout the day to slow the cure. In cold weather, use Type S mortar with a hot water mix and cover with insulating blankets — never add antifreeze chemicals to mortar, as they degrade long-term bond strength.

For a standard modular brick in running bond, each linear foot of wall contains: 12 inches divided by 8-inch unit length = 1.5 bricks per course per linear foot. For a wall height of 6 feet (28 courses): 1.5 x 28 = 42 bricks per linear foot of wall. For a 20-ft wall: 42 x 20 = 840 bricks at the face (before waste). With 5% waste: 840 x 1.05 = 882 bricks. How many courses of brick equal one foot?+
For standard modular brick with 3/8-inch mortar joints: each course is 2.625 inches tall (2.25-inch brick height plus 0.375-inch mortar joint). One foot (12 inches) divided by 2.625 = 4.57 courses per foot. A double-wythe wall is two bricks thick (approximately 8 inches, a nominal 8-inch wall) with header bricks or metal ties connecting the two wythes together. Single-wythe walls are used for landscape features, garden walls, and non-structural interior dividers. Fresh mortar smears can be removed with a stiff fiber brush and water within the first 30 to 60 minutes before the mortar sets. Once mortar has hardened (typically 24 to 48 hours after placement), it must be removed with diluted muriatic acid: mix 1 part muriatic acid with 10 to 12 parts water (always add acid to water, never water to acid), wet the brick thoroughly with plain water first to prevent acid from soaking into the pores, then apply the diluted acid solution and scrub with a stiff brush.
