Square footage equals length multiplied by width in feet. Cubic yards equals square footage times depth in feet, divided by 27, multiplied by 1.10 for the 10% waste factor. The calculator uses Big.js precision arithmetic throughout to eliminate floating-point errors in the volume calculation.
The waste load estimate uses the container size from the preset (4 cubic yards for front-load, 10, 20, or 35 for roll-off sizes) multiplied by the waste density selected in the waste type buttons. Light junk including furniture and household items weighs approximately 300 pounds per cubic yard. Mixed renovation debris weighs approximately 700 pounds per cubic yard. Rebar Must Go in Before the Pour, Placed at Mid-Depth
For roll-off dumpster pads that will be subjected to the drive-on load of a delivery truck, No. 3 rebar (3/8-inch diameter) on 12-inch centers in both directions is the correct reinforcement. The rebar must be placed at mid-depth of the slab, which means 3 inches from the bottom in a 6-inch pad. Use wire chairs or small broken tile under the rebar grid to hold it off the sub-base. Rebar sitting on the sub-base provides no tensile reinforcement benefit because it is at the wrong depth in the slab. The 12-inch center spacing for dumpster pads is tighter than the 18-inch spacing recommended for residential slabs because the concentrated axle loads are significantly heavier and the slab must distribute them over a larger area of the sub-base.

Slope 2% Toward the Front Edge for Drainage
Roll-off dumpster pads accumulate significant liquid from rain, leachate draining from the container, and wash-down water during cleaning. A 2% slope (roughly 2.5 inches of fall across a 10-foot pad) directed toward the street or a yard drain prevents water from pooling under and around the dumpster, which accelerates container corrosion and creates a slip hazard during service. For commercial front-load enclosures, the slope direction should point away from the access gate to avoid directing dirty water toward the service area. Establish the slope by setting form boards at the correct elevation difference before placing rebar and concrete. Size the Pad for the Truck Axle Stance, Not Just the Container
The most common mistake in residential roll-off pad design is sizing the pad exactly to the container footprint (8 ft wide) and having the delivery truck axles partially on the pad and partially on the adjacent lawn or driveway. A roll-off truck with 66,000 lbs GVWR driving partially on unsupported ground can sink into soft soil, damaging both the vehicle and the edge of the concrete pad. The truck wheels are typically 2 to 3 feet from the outside edge of the container during drop-off. A pad width of 10 to 12 feet instead of 8 feet gives the truck sufficient concrete support during the entire drop-off and pick-up maneuver. The extra 2 to 4 feet of pad width adds 1 to 2 yards to a 22-foot long pad, which is worthwhile to prevent a $500 to $1,500 tow bill if the truck sinks into soft ground.
How thick does a concrete dumpster pad need to be?+

What size concrete pad does a 20-yard roll-off dumpster need?+

How heavy is a loaded 20-yard dumpster?+
A 20-yard roll-off container weighs approximately 4,000 to 5,000 pounds empty. When loaded with mixed renovation debris at approximately 700 pounds per cubic yard, the container can hold up to 14,000 pounds of waste. The total loaded weight of the container plus waste is approximately 18,000 to 19,000 pounds. However, the weight that matters most for pad design is the delivery truck weight, not the dumpster: the delivery truck and its loaded container combined can weigh 50,000 to 80,000 pounds GVWR, depending on the truck and container size. What PSI concrete should I use for a roll-off dumpster pad?+
Specify 4,000 psi concrete for all roll-off dumpster pads. This is the same strength specified for exterior vehicle-bearing slabs including commercial driveways and parking aprons. If the pad is in a freeze-thaw climate where deicing agents from the truck will contact the surface, specify 4,500 psi with air entrainment (4 to 6% air content). Higher strength is particularly important for dumpster pads because the surface abrasion from repeated truck traffic over the same area can erode weaker concrete over time. Why does the calculator add 10% waste to a dumpster pad pour?+
The 10% waste factor accounts for concrete lost at form edges, concrete remaining in the ready-mix truck drum after discharge (typically 0.2 to 0.3 cubic yards for a standard drum), any sub-base undulations that increase average slab depth slightly above nominal, and the extra concrete at rebar-to-form intersections where the pour is slightly thicker. For a 3.59-cubic-yard roll-off pad, 10% represents approximately 0.33 cubic yards, which at $150 per yard adds about $49 to the concrete order. Ordering without this buffer risks running short near the end of the pour, which on a large pad means calling for a second truck delivery at full price. How do I clean a concrete dumpster pad?+
