Post count from fence length: (fence length divided by post spacing) plus 1, rounded down to the nearest whole number. Per-hole concrete volume equals pi times (hole diameter in feet divided by 2) squared times concrete depth in feet. Concrete depth equals total hole depth minus the 6-inch gravel base if selected. Total volume equals per-hole volume times post count times 1.10 for waste. Bag count equals total volume divided by bag yield (0.375 cu ft for Fast-Set 50 lb, 0.45 cu ft for standard 60 lb, 0.60 cu ft for 80 lb). Always Add 6 Inches of Gravel at the Bottom of the Hole
The single most common cause of premature fence post failure is wood rot at the base of the post. The post rots not because of the soil contact but because of moisture trapped at the bottom of the concrete column. When the post hole has no drainage, rainwater and frost melt collect at the bottom of the hole, soaking the wood end grain through a capillary path between the post and the concrete. Adding 6 inches of crushed gravel at the bottom of every post hole before setting the post allows water to drain away from the wood end grain rather than pooling. Crown the Concrete 2 Inches Above Grade to Shed Water
When you screed off the concrete at grade level (flush with the surrounding soil), you create a perfect bowl that channels rainwater directly to the wood-concrete interface where the post enters the concrete. The correct finish is to crown the concrete 1 to 2 inches above grade and slope it away from the post in all directions so it sheds water like a mushroom cap. This keeps water from pooling at the top of the concrete column and prevents frost from having a flat horizontal surface to heave against, which reduces the likelihood of frost heave pushing the post upward in freeze-thaw climates. Use a margin trowel to form the crown before the concrete sets, and check that the slope is visible on all four sides of the post. Use String Lines Between Batter Boards Before Setting a Single Post
The most expensive mistake in fence installation is setting the first few posts and then discovering at post 8 or post 10 that the string line drifted 3 inches. Correcting a misaligned concrete-set post requires breaking out the concrete with a breaker bar, refilling the hole, and starting over. The number of bags per fence post depends on hole diameter and depth. How deep should fence post holes be?+
The standard depth rule for fence post holes is one-third of the total post length below grade, with a minimum of 24 inches in warm climates and at or below local frost depth in freeze-thaw climates. For a 6-foot privacy fence using 8-foot posts (6 feet above grade and 2 feet below is common), the minimum depth per the 1/3 rule is 8 feet divided by 3, which equals 32 inches. Many residential fence installers use 24 to 30 inches for standard privacy fence posts, which is slightly less than the 1/3 rule for an 8-foot post but is considered acceptable for residential fencing where the loads are modest. Gate posts and corner posts should always be dug to the full 1/3 depth or deeper because they carry lateral gate load and hinge tension in addition to the panel wind load.
Can I use the dry-pour method with regular concrete mix?+
The dry-pour (no-mix) method should only be used with Quikrete Fast-Setting Concrete or an equivalent fast-setting product specifically designed for it. What diameter hole should I dig for a 4×4 fence post?+

Why does the calculator add 1 to the fence length divided by spacing?+
A straight run of fence with 8-foot panels at 8-foot post spacing needs one post at the start of the run, one post at each panel joint, and one post at the end of the run. For a 100-foot run with 8-foot spacing, that is 100 divided by 8 equals 12.5 (rounds to 12 spaces) plus 1 end post, which equals 13 posts. If the run is exactly divisible (like 80 feet at 8-foot spacing), there are 80 divided by 8 equals 10 spaces plus 1 end post, which equals 11 posts. The formula is (fence length divided by spacing) rounded down to nearest whole number, plus 1. This formula is for a single straight run with no corners. For a full perimeter fence with 4 corners, the corner posts are also included in this count, so no additional posts need to be added for corners — just trace the full perimeter as a single linear measurement.
Do fence posts need to go below the frost line?+
In freeze-thaw climates, fence post holes should extend below the local frost depth to prevent frost heave from pushing the posts upward each winter. The one-third depth rule states that a fence post must be buried in the ground for at least one-third of its total length to resist lateral forces from wind.
