Not a single one of those tools asks you what to do about the pool. They calculate the outer envelope — the full 24 x 40-foot rectangle for a 16 x 32-foot pool with 4-foot decks — and tell you that you need enough concrete for 960 square feet. What you actually need is concrete for 448 square feet, because the pool is in the middle and no concrete goes in the water.

3 Expert Tips for Pouring a Concrete Pool Deck

Pour Before the Coping Is Set, Not After

The sequence of pool deck construction in the US is almost always: pool shell installed, coping stones or bullnose tile set along the pool edge, then concrete poured up to and against the coping. If you reverse this and pour the concrete before the coping is set, you avoid two expensive problems: the concrete does not have to be cut to fit irregular coping stone joints, and the pour does not need to work around the protrusion of each coping piece above slab level. The coping acts as the form on the pool side of the deck pour, which eliminates one full side of formwork on the perimeter. For pools without tile coping, the deck can be poured with a rounded bull-nose edge using a special edge form tool, which requires the pour to happen before any edge material is applied. Coordinate your sequence with the pool contractor before either trade schedules their work.

Use a 10-Foot Control Joint Grid, Not the Standard 15-Foot

The standard recommendation for exterior residential concrete slabs is control joints at 10 to 15 feet. Pool decks should use the tighter 10-foot maximum spacing for three reasons. First, pool decks are subject to thermal stress cycles from frequent wet-dry transitions as splash and rain wet the surface and then dry in the sun. Second, pool deck concrete is exposed to chlorinated water, which is slightly acidic and can attack concrete at crack edges, widening any crack that forms.
