A room with complex layout — lots of closets, soffits, multiple doorways — has proportionally more inside and outside corners relative to its square footage than a simple rectangular room. Applying a square-footage-only estimate to a complex room consistently underestimates tape for the corner category, leaving finishers short before the vertical seams are complete. Seam Footage Estimation

Flat seam footage is estimated as total wall area divided by 4.0 (one linear foot of seam per 4 square feet of drywall, reflecting standard 4×8 sheet horizontal installation with horizontal seams every 4 feet of wall height plus vertical seams every 4 feet of wall width). Inside corner footage equals number of inside corners multiplied by ceiling height. Ceiling-wall perimeter seam equals room perimeter (2 times length plus width). Outside Corner Bead

Outside corners use metal or vinyl corner bead (not tape). Corner bead is sold in 8-foot pieces. Pieces needed equals ceiling height divided by 8, times the number of outside corners, rounded up. For standard 8-foot ceilings, one piece per outside corner. For 9-foot ceilings, two pieces per outside corner (one 8-ft piece plus a shorter cut piece).
