What Is a Roofing Square and How Roof Pitch Converts Your Floor Area to
A roofing square is a unit of measurement used exclusively in the US roofing trade. One square equals 100 square feet of actual roof surface area. All US shingle pricing, contractor bidding, and material ordering is done in squares, not in square feet. If a roofer quotes your job at $200 per square and your roof is 28 squares, the material and labor total is $5,600.
The single most misunderstood concept in US residential roofing measurement is the difference between your house footprint (the horizontal floor area you can see from above) and the actual sloped roof surface area the roofer has to cover with shingles. A 2,000 square foot house footprint does not have a 2,000 square foot roof. The roof is steeper than the floor, so its actual surface area is larger by a factor determined by the roof pitch. 3 Expert Tips for Roof Shingle Installation in the US
The International Residential Code (IRC), which forms the basis for building codes in all 50 US states, requires ice and water shield (self-adhering waterproofing membrane) at the eave edge in climate zones prone to ice dams. Ice dams form when snow on the upper roof melts, runs down to the cold eave overhang, and refreezes as a ridge of ice. Water backs up behind this ice dam and finds its way under the shingles, causing severe interior water damage to ceilings, insulation, and framing. The IRC minimum requirement is ice and water shield from the eave edge to a point at least 24 inches inside the interior wall line.
