On a 40-question test with A starting at 90%, you need at least 36 correct for an A, 32 for a B, 28 for a C, and 24 for a D. How do I add a curve to my test grade? +

Enter the number of bonus or curve points in the Curve field. The calculator adds those points to your earned score before computing the percentage. If you scored 35 out of 50 and the teacher adds a 3-point curve, the calculator computes (35 + 3) / 50 = 76%. A negative value subtracts points. For percentage-based curves where the teacher scales everyone’s score by a multiplier rather than adding flat points, first apply the multiplier to your score manually and enter the result as your earned score.

What is a passing grade on a test in the US? +

In most US secondary schools, 60% is the minimum passing grade, corresponding to a D. In many college courses and professional programs, the passing threshold is higher: 70% or above for credit, and 75% or 80% for courses that feed into professional certifications. Some graduate programs require 80% or higher to pass individual courses, and medical and law programs may require 75% as a minimum passing score even for courses where students elsewhere receive credit at lower percentages. How is a test grade calculated in a weighted course? +

Why does my calculated grade differ from my gradebook? +

Common causes include rounding differences — your teacher may round up at 0.5 while this calculator shows the decimal — different letter grade cutoffs than the defaults shown here, partial credit being applied differently, or an existing curve already applied before you see the score. Always check your syllabus for the exact grade thresholds and rounding rules your teacher uses. If your teacher uses non-standard cutoffs such as A starting at 93% or C ending at 74%, those would produce different letter assignments than the defaults in this tool.

Is this calculator accurate for AP, IB, and SAT tests? +

The percentage and letter grade calculations are mathematically accurate for any test format. However, AP scores (1-5), IB scores (1-7), and SAT scores (400-1600) are band or scaled scores computed from raw scores using official conversion tables, not simple percentage calculations. Can I enter half points for partial credit questions? +

Yes. The right and wrong fields accept decimal values, so you can enter 17.5 right on a 25-point quiz where one question received half credit. The percentage calculation works with any decimal score: 17.5 / 25 = 70%. Similarly, enter 0.5 in the wrong field if you received half a point of deduction. Use increments of 0.5 for half-point scoring and the percentage will reflect the exact partial credit amount.

What does it mean if the course impact grade is higher than my test score? +

It means your test score was lower than your current course average, but your current average was high enough that even a below-average test score still left you above the letter grade boundary. For example, if your current grade is 92% and this test is worth 20%, even scoring 70% on the test only drops your course grade to (92 x 0.80) + (70 x 0.20) = 73.6 + 14 = 87.6%. How accurate is the course impact formula? +

The formula is accurate when your current grade represents your average on all other graded work excluding this test. If the gradebook already includes a previous test in the same category or has already processed the current test, the result may differ slightly.
