Equine obesity is a serious and growing problem in the US. Moderate (Ideal)
Back is level. Ribs cannot be seen but are easily palpated with light pressure. Withers appear rounded and smooth. Shoulders and neck blend smoothly into body. The ideal score for most horses and disciplines.
Moderately Fleshy
May have slight crease down back. Fat over ribs feels spongy. Fat around tailhead is soft. Neck and withers beginning to fill with fat. Acceptable for broodmares entering winter or breeding season.
Fleshy
Crease may be visible down back. Fat filling neck, behind shoulders, and around tailhead. Individual ribs still palpable with firm pressure. This is the threshold where metabolic health risk begins increasing significantly.

How the Henneke BCS Calculator Works: Assessment Methodology and Breed-Specific Targets

The overall BCS is the arithmetic average of all six area scores, rounded to the nearest half-point. This is exactly how equine veterinarians and trained assessors calculate BCS in the field. Some published guidance suggests dropping outlier scores when conformation extremes (very high withers in a Thoroughbred, a natural cresty neck in a certain Morgan) make one area artificially difficult to assess accurately. Why Breed and Life Stage Change the Ideal Target
A BCS of 5 is the textbook ideal for most horses in maintenance. But the equine body condition story is more nuanced than a single target number for all horses at all times. Thoroughbreds and other hot-blooded, hard-keeping breeds typically carry less fat than a Quarter Horse at the same caloric intake, and their racing counterparts are often intentionally maintained closer to 4.0 to 4.5 for peak performance. Easy keepers, ponies, and insulin-dysregulation-prone breeds like certain Morgans and Andalusians are often healthier and at lower metabolic risk at BCS 4 to 4.5 than at the “standard” 5 to 6 range.
Broodmares are generally recommended to enter the breeding season at a BCS of 5 to 6. Research from Oklahoma State University and other land-grant universities has consistently shown that mares with a BCS below 5 at breeding time have lower first-cycle conception rates and are more likely to experience anestrus delays. Conversely, mares above 7 face elevated foaling complications and increased metabolic disease risk during pregnancy. The goal is a moderate flush of condition into breeding, not extreme thinness or obesity.
Senior horses (generally those 15 and older) often benefit from being maintained at the slightly higher end of the ideal range, around 5 to 6, as a buffer against the rapid condition loss that can happen quickly in cold weather when a dental problem emerges or a management transition disrupts their routine. A senior horse at 4.5 has very little reserve. The same horse at 5.5 has a meaningful buffer that can sustain her through a week of weather-related feed disruption or a dental float recovery period.

When a horse is below ideal BCS by one full point, the general recommendation from equine nutritionists is to increase total digestible energy intake by approximately 16 to 25 percent above maintenance. This does not change how you score the horse on the Henneke scale, but it is an important adjunct observation to make every time you do your BCS assessment.
Three Expert Tips for Accurate Henneke Body Condition Scoring
Always Palpate, Never Only Look
The Henneke system explicitly requires both visual assessment AND hands-on palpation. A long winter coat can make a BCS 3 horse appear to be a 5, and a heavy sheet can completely obscure a 7 or 8. You must feel the ribs, press along the loin, and run your hand over the tailhead to assess fat cover accurately. The ribs in particular should be assessed with your palm flat against the barrel, using moderate pressure, not just a fingertip poke. If you cannot feel individual ribs at all, that is a minimum BCS 7 for the rib area regardless of what the horse looks like in a photo.
Score in the Same Order Every Time
Assess the six areas in a consistent sequence (neck, withers, shoulder, ribs, loin, tailhead is the standard Henneke order) every single time you score. This builds muscle memory that improves accuracy and prevents the natural human tendency to anchor your score on the first area you look at and then unconsciously adjust all the others toward that anchor. Score each area independently before looking at your total, not after. Document with Photos Alongside Your Scores
A body condition score without photographic documentation is much less useful for tracking change over time than a score paired with consistent reference photos.
