Fill in 6-Inch Lifts and Rod After Each Lift

A sonotube is a narrow, deep form — 12 inches wide and 48 inches deep. Pouring all the concrete at once from the top creates air pockets and voids deep in the tube that you cannot see or reach. Pour in 6-inch lifts, and after each lift, rod the concrete vigorously with a 1-inch diameter steel bar (a piece of rebar works fine), pushing the rod down through the fresh concrete at 3 or 4 positions around the tube to work out air bubbles. Do not rod the previous stiff lift — only the fresh concrete you just poured. After the last lift, screed the top surface of the concrete with a trowel and insert the post anchor or post directly while the concrete is still wet. If you are setting a J-bolt anchor plate, verify the bolt position matches your post base hardware before the concrete stiffens.

Cut the Tube Flush at Grade Before the Concrete Sets

Does a sonotube need to be wider at the bottom?+
