Buying field blocks without buying cap blocks means your wall looks unfinished. Our calculator shows them as separate numbers because that is how you buy them. For curved walls, a gentle garden curve requires 10% extra blocks over a straight wall because of the cuts and overlaps needed to follow the arc. The raised bed mode is what makes this calculator genuinely different from anything else online. For a raised bed, you are not building one wall — you are building four walls, and all four sides together form the perimeter you need to block out. A 4×8 ft raised bed at 2 ft tall has a perimeter of 24 linear feet and a total wall area of 48 square feet. You need 151 field blocks plus 24 cap blocks for the top course. You also need 2.37 cubic yards of garden soil or raised bed mix to fill the interior. Our calculator gives you all three numbers from a single set of inputs.
Single wall mode: wall area = length x height. Block count = area / block face area x waste factor. For 4×12-in blocks: face area = 0.333 sq ft, 3 blocks per sq ft. Order Cap Blocks Separately — They Sell Out Faster Than Field Blocks
Segmented landscape wall systems are sold in two block types: field blocks (the main stacking blocks) and cap blocks (the flat-topped finishing row for the top course). Caps are sold separately, usually at the same or slightly higher price per block than field blocks, and they are consistently understocked at big box stores because most people forget to calculate them until they reach the top course. When you place your order, specify both quantities at the same time and ask the store to reserve the caps. For a curved wall, order 10 to 15% extra caps as well — curved top courses require angled cuts on the cap blocks at each bend, which produces waste pieces. For Raised Beds Over 2 Feet Tall, Use 6×12 Blocks — Not 4×12
The standard 4-inch-tall segmented landscape block is designed for decorative walls and low retaining applications up to about 2 feet of exposed height. For raised garden beds over 2 feet tall, the deeper 6×12-inch landscape block (like the Allan Block Standard or Pavestone Ledgestone) provides significantly better lateral resistance because each block is deeper from front to back and interlocks more securely. At 3 feet of garden bed height, the outward water and soil pressure from a saturated raised bed is substantial — using 4-inch blocks at this height risks the wall bowing outward between courses. Start the First Course Below Grade and Check for Level in Both Directions
The most common mistake with segmented landscape walls is starting the first course directly on the soil surface without burying it. The first course should be set 2 to 4 inches below finished grade — enough so that only 1 to 2 inches of the first block are visible. This anchors the base course and prevents it from sliding forward. Before setting the first block, excavate to the required depth, compact the soil, then spread a 2-inch layer of compacted paver base or crushed stone as the setting bed. Check the first course for level in both directions (along the wall length and perpendicular to it) with a 4-foot level before placing any subsequent courses. A first course that is off level by 1/4 inch translates to more than 1 inch of error by the time you reach the top of a 4-foot wall. Get the base right and the rest of the wall builds quickly.
How many segmented blocks do I need for a landscape wall?+
