They either end up with three bags left over and a half-finished project, or they pay for a second delivery because they came up short. The single most common sand calculation mistake: using generic “1.3 tons per cubic yard” for every sand type. Why Moisture Matters More Than You Think

Sand weighs significantly more when wet. Dry play sand at 1.44 tons per cubic yard becomes damp delivery sand at about 1.66 tons per cubic yard — a 15% difference on the scale at the quarry. Wet, rain-soaked sand can hit 1.80 tons per cubic yard. If you order 2 cubic yards of “dry” play sand and your supplier loads damp sand, the scale ticket will show 3.32 tons instead of 2.88 tons. This is why bulk sand is almost always purchased by the ton, not by the yard — and why our calculator shows you the weight range across moisture conditions. For small retail bags, you’re buying by weight already, so moisture is pre-controlled.

Paver Base Sand — ICPI Tech Spec 2

The Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute (ICPI) Tech Spec 2 specifies a 1-inch screeded bedding layer of coarse, clean sand (not fine play sand) between the compacted gravel base and the paver surface. The 25% compaction factor our calculator adds is real: when you screed a 1-inch layer of loose sand and then compact the pavers into it, you lose approximately 20–25% of volume to settlement. Never use fine play sand or masonry sand as paver bedding — it squishes out under load and causes joint failure.

Do NOT use play sand for paver base. Fine-grained play sand does not drain well, compacts unevenly, and migrates out from under pavers when wet. Per ICPI guidelines, paver bedding sand must be coarse and well-graded (ASTM C33 or equivalent). Order Bulk Sand by the Ton, Not by the Yard — for Any Large Project

Sand weight varies significantly by moisture. When a quarry loads a dump truck, they weigh it on a scale — and you pay by that weight. If you ordered “2 yards” of sand and they loaded damp material, you might actually get 1.75 yards of volume (because damp sand is denser and packs more per ton). Ordering by the ton eliminates this ambiguity. Tell the supplier your square footage and depth, and ask them how many tons they recommend — good suppliers will factor in moisture and compaction from experience. For projects under about 0.5 cubic yards (roughly 12–15 cubic feet), retail bags from a big-box store are actually more convenient and cost-competitive once delivery fees are factored in.

Don’t Overload Your Pickup Truck — Sand Is Extremely Heavy

A standard half-ton pickup truck (F-150, Silverado 1500, RAM 1500) has a typical payload capacity of 1,000–1,700 lbs depending on trim and configuration. One cubic yard of dry sand weighs approximately 2,880 lbs — nearly twice the safe payload limit. Use the Right Sand Grade — the Wrong One Will Fail the Application

Play sand, concrete sand, masonry sand, and pool filter sand are not interchangeable — they have different grain shapes, sizes, and grading specs that directly affect performance. Fine play sand holds moisture and will crust between pavers, causing shifting and weed growth. Coarse concrete sand in a sandbox creates rough surfaces that abrade skin.
