How Our Sod Calculator Works — And Why Obstacle Subtraction Matters

Every sod calculator on the internet does the same basic math: multiply length × width, divide by 450 to get pallets. Our calculator does that too — but it adds three features that actually change the order quantity in meaningful ways for real US lawns.

Multi-Area Addition

Most residential lawns are not one rectangle. They have a front yard, a backyard, and side strips — all separate dimensions that need to be totaled before you can calculate a pallet count. Add each section separately in our calculator, and the total automatically accumulates. Never add the wrong numbers together again.

Obstacle Subtraction

This is the most overlooked step in residential sod ordering. Your total gross lawn area is NOT the area you need sod for. Subtract out: the driveway, the house footprint if it falls within your measured rectangle, any garden beds or landscaping areas, the pool, the patio, and any other hardscape. For a typical suburban backyard where the home and driveway take up 20–30% of the measured rectangle, skipping obstacle subtraction means ordering 20–30% too much sod.

How much extra sod to order: Turfgrass Producers International (the US sod industry trade group) recommends ordering 5% extra for simple rectangular lawns with straight edges, 10% for moderately complex shapes, and 15% for lawns with many curves, obstacles, and tight corners. Every cut creates scrap that cannot be reused. Our default 10% is appropriate for most residential projects — bump it to 15% if your yard has many garden beds, tree rings, or curves.

Sod comes in three formats sold by US growers, and the right format depends on your project size and access:

Sod will not thrive on compacted subsoil or bare construction-grade fill. Rototill the top 4–6 inches of soil, add 4 inches of screened topsoil if the native soil is poor, rake level, and lightly tamp before sod arrives. Water Immediately and Obsessively for the First 3 Weeks

New sod has tiny root stubs that can only access water from the top half-inch of soil. If that thin layer dries out — even once in the first two weeks — the sod dies. Water immediately after installation (within 30 minutes) and keep the soil moist to a depth of 3–4 inches for the first 2 weeks. In summer heat, that may mean watering 2–3 times per day. After roots establish (you can feel resistance when you try to pull a corner up), transition to a normal lawn watering schedule.
