The most expensive mistake you can make with a sod project is ordering the wrong grass species for your climate. A beautiful Bermuda lawn in a Minnesota backyard will be dead by November. St. Augustine sod shipped to Oregon will struggle through the first summer. Warm-Season Grasses — The South and Southwest Standard
Warm-season grasses go dormant (turn brown) in winter and green up aggressively from spring through fall. They thrive in heat that would stress cool-season grasses. If you live south of a line roughly from Richmond, Virginia across to Albuquerque, New Mexico, you are likely in warm-season grass territory.
- Bermuda grass (Zones 7–10): The most heat and drought tolerant of all common turf grasses. Recovers quickly from traffic and wear. Best for full sun — struggles with more than 30% shade. Cool-Season Grasses — The Northern US Lawn Standard
Cool-season grasses grow most vigorously in spring and fall, go semi-dormant in summer heat, and stay green year-round in mild climates. North of the warm-season line, these are your only viable options for permanent turf.
- Tall Fescue (Zones 4–7): The most adaptable cool-season grass — handles heat, drought, and shade better than bluegrass or ryegrass. The dominant lawn grass through the mid-Atlantic, Midwest transition zone, and mountains. Install in fall (September–November) for best establishment before winter.
- Kentucky Bluegrass (Zones 3–7): The premium cool-season grass — fine texture, deep blue-green color, and a remarkable ability to self-repair through underground rhizomes. How Our Sod Calculator Works — And Why Obstacle Subtraction Matters
Every sod calculator on the internet does the same basic math: multiply length × width, divide by 450 to get pallets. Our calculator does that too — but it adds three features that actually change the order quantity in meaningful ways for real US lawns.
Multi-Area Addition
Most residential lawns are not one rectangle. They have a front yard, a backyard, and side strips — all separate dimensions that need to be totaled before you can calculate a pallet count. Add each section separately in our calculator, and the total automatically accumulates. Never add the wrong numbers together again.
Obstacle Subtraction
This is the most overlooked step in residential sod ordering. Your total gross lawn area is NOT the area you need sod for. Subtract out: the driveway, the house footprint if it falls within your measured rectangle, any garden beds or landscaping areas, the pool, the patio, and any other hardscape. For a typical suburban backyard where the home and driveway take up 20–30% of the measured rectangle, skipping obstacle subtraction means ordering 20–30% too much sod.
Pallet vs. Roll vs. Big Roll
Sod comes in three formats sold by US growers, and the right format depends on your project size and access:
- Standard pallets (450 sq ft): The industry standard for residential installation. Each pallet holds about 171 pieces of standard 16″ × 24″ sod. A wet pallet weighs 2,800–3,000 lbs — delivery truck required for multiple pallets.
- Individual rolls (10 sq ft each): The retail format sold at Home Depot and Lowe’s. $5–$10 per roll depending on grass type. Practical for touch-ups and small areas under 100 sq ft. Prohibitively expensive for full lawn installation — equivalent to $215–$430 per pallet.
- Big rolls (500 sq ft): Commercial format used on golf courses, sports fields, and large residential estates. Requires specialized delivery equipment. Not available at most retail sod farms — requires ordering through a commercial sod producer.

Three Expert Tips for a Successful Sod Installation
Prepare the Soil Before the Sod Truck Arrives
Sod will not thrive on compacted subsoil or bare construction-grade fill. Rototill the top 4–6 inches of soil, add 4 inches of screened topsoil if the native soil is poor, rake level, and lightly tamp before sod arrives. The delivery should be scheduled to arrive the same day you are ready to install — do not let sod sit on pallets for more than 24 hours in summer heat. Water Immediately and Obsessively for the First 3 Weeks
New sod has tiny root stubs that can only access water from the top half-inch of soil. If that thin layer dries out — even once in the first two weeks — the sod dies. Water immediately after installation (within 30 minutes) and keep the soil moist to a depth of 3–4 inches for the first 2 weeks. In summer heat, that may mean watering 2–3 times per day. After roots establish (you can feel resistance when you try to pull a corner up), transition to a normal lawn watering schedule. Most failed sod installations trace back to inadequate watering in the first 14 days.
Stagger the Seams Like Brickwork — Never Line Them Up
Sod seams that run straight across a lawn in parallel lines create visible lines when the grass does not knit together perfectly — and they become channels for erosion and drying. Stagger each row by half a sod piece length, just like bricklaying pattern. At curves, cut sod with a sharp edging spade or sod knife, not scissors. Butt pieces snugly against each other — gaps dry out faster than the rest of the lawn. On slopes, lay sod horizontally across the slope (not up and down) and pin with landscape staples until roots establish.
