Grass Seed Calculator: What the Bag Label Doesn’t Tell You About How Much to
The coverage claim on any grass seed bag is based on a standard germination percentage — usually around 85%. When the bag says “covers 1,000 square feet,” it’s assuming 85% of those seeds will successfully germinate under good conditions. Buy a bag with 70% germination (common in economy blends) and that same bag only covers about 824 square feet at the same seeding density. Buy a bag with 95% germination (premium certified seed) and it covers about 1,118 square feet. That’s a 35% difference in coverage from the same weight of seed, and nobody adjusts for it.
The other number almost everyone gets wrong is seeding depth. Kentucky Bluegrass and Fine Fescue seed should be planted at 1/16 to 1/8 inch deep — roughly the thickness of a piece of cardboard. At 1/4 inch depth (what most people think of as “covering” the seed), germination rates for these fine-seeded species drop dramatically because the seedling runs out of stored energy before it reaches light. Every bag of grass seed sold in the US is legally required to contain a seed tag — a paper label stitched into the seam of the bag or printed on a separate card inside — that lists the actual test results for that specific lot of seed. This tag shows: (1) purity percentage — what percentage of the bag is actually the grass species listed vs. inert matter and weed seeds, (2) germination percentage — what percentage of those seeds will germinate under standard lab conditions, (3) the test date — germination rates decline over time, so a tag tested 2 years ago has lower actual germination than what’s shown. The bag’s marketing label might say “covers 5,000 sq ft” — the seed tag tells you the actual performance data. Never Plant Grass Seed Deeper Than 1/4 Inch: Most Failures Are From Too Deep
Grass seeds are tiny, and the seedling’s energy reserves (the endosperm inside the seed) are enough to push through only a limited amount of soil. Kentucky Bluegrass and Fine Fescue seeds should be planted at 1/16 to 1/8 inch — about as deep as the thickness of a quarter. Centipede seed should literally sit on the soil surface and be pressed into contact with a roller, not covered at all.
