How do I calculate how much paint I need for a room?▼
The standard formula is: total wall area in square feet divided by 400 equals gallons needed per coat. Wall area is your room perimeter times ceiling height, minus roughly 20 sq ft per door and 15 sq ft per window. Most rooms need two coats, so multiply by two and always round up to the nearest quart or gallon. What is a roofing square and how many do I need?▼
A roofing square equals exactly 100 square feet of actual roof surface area—not your house’s floor footprint. Because a pitched roof covers more surface than the flat ground below it, you multiply your footprint by the roof’s slope multiplier. A 6/12 pitch has a multiplier of 1.118, meaning a 1,000 sq ft footprint needs materials for 1,118 sq ft of roof surface. How many sheets of drywall do I need for a 12×12 room?▼
A standard 12×12 room with 8-foot ceilings has roughly 384 sq ft of wall area before subtracting doors and windows, plus 144 sq ft of ceiling. Using standard 4×8 sheets at 32 sq ft each, that is about 16 to 18 sheets for the walls and 5 to 6 for the ceiling—around 22 sheets before waste. Why do flooring calculators add a waste percentage?▼
Every flooring installation requires cuts at walls, around cabinets, and at doorways—and those cut pieces usually cannot be reused. Standard waste factors are: 10% for straight-lay square or rectangular tile, 15% for hardwood and LVP installed at standard angles, and 20 to 25% for diagonal, herringbone, or chevron patterns that require far more angled cuts. Ordering without a waste buffer is the single most common beginner mistake—you will run short every single time.
How many 2×4 studs do I need for a 10-foot wall?▼
For standard 16-inch on-center stud layout, the formula is: wall length in inches divided by 16, plus 1. For a 10-foot wall (120 inches), that is 120 divided by 16 plus 1 equals 8.5, rounded up to 9 studs. You also need top and bottom plates, so add 20 linear feet of 2×4 plate material. What is the difference between sanded and unsanded grout?▼
Sanded grout contains fine sand aggregate and is used for tile joints wider than 1/8 inch. It is stronger and resists shrinkage cracking in wider joints. How do I calculate BTUs for a room air conditioner?▼
The ENERGY STAR baseline is 20 BTU per square foot of living space. A 300 sq ft room needs roughly 6,000 BTUs; 600 sq ft needs 12,000 BTUs. But that is just the starting point. Add 10% if the room gets strong afternoon sun, subtract 10% if it is heavily shaded, add 600 BTUs per additional regular occupant beyond two people, and add 4,000 BTUs if the unit is in a kitchen. How much thinset mortar do I need per square foot of tile?▼
A 50-lb bag of standard modified thinset covers approximately 40 to 50 sq ft using a 1/4-inch V-notch trowel. For larger tiles 12×12 and up, you will use a 3/8-inch or 1/2-inch square-notch trowel, which deposits more mortar and reduces coverage to 30 to 40 sq ft per bag. For standard 5/4×6 deck boards at 5.5 inches wide, divide your deck width in inches by the board width plus the gap width. The most common gap is 1/4 inch, so each board takes up 5.75 inches. A standard two-car garage runs about 400 to 500 sq ft. Most 100% solids epoxy coatings cover 200 to 250 sq ft per gallon on properly prepared concrete. Carpet is sold in square yards in the US, where 1 square yard equals 9 square feet. Divide your total square footage by 9 to get square yards. What is LVP flooring and how is it different from laminate?▼
Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) is 100% waterproof plastic with a photographic wood-look layer and a protective wear layer on top. Laminate is a wood-fiber core with a photographic layer and is NOT waterproof. LVP can go in bathrooms, laundry rooms, and below-grade basements where laminate would swell and buckle.
