The coverage claim on any grass seed bag is based on a standard germination percentage — usually around 85%. When the bag says “covers 1,000 square feet,” it’s assuming 85% of those seeds will successfully germinate under good conditions. Buy a bag with 70% germination (common in economy blends) and that same bag only covers about 824 square feet at the same seeding density. Buy a bag with 95% germination (premium certified seed) and it covers about 1,118 square feet. That’s a 35% difference in coverage from the same weight of seed, and nobody adjusts for it.

The other number almost everyone gets wrong is seeding depth. Kentucky Bluegrass and Fine Fescue seed should be planted at 1/16 to 1/8 inch deep — roughly the thickness of a piece of cardboard.
