Tree Spacing Calculator — The Two Numbers Most Homeowners Get Wrong
The first number homeowners get wrong when planting trees is the spacing — specifically, how much space the tree will occupy at maturity vs. how small it looks at the nursery. A 6-foot Norway Spruce looks perfectly manageable at 10 feet apart. At year 20, each of those spruces will have a canopy 20–25 feet wide, and the row that looked perfectly spaced will be a wall of overlapping, competing, browning inner branches. The rule of thumb for windbreak and ornamental evergreens: space them at 75–85% of mature width. For shade trees: space at 100% of mature width or slightly more. For fruit trees: follow the specific spacing for the rootstock — semi-dwarf apple at 12–15 feet, full-size apple at 20–25 feet.

Three Expert Tips for Successful Tree Planting
Call 811 Before You Dig — Underground Utilities are Everywhere
811 is the national “Call Before You Dig” number in the United States. Before digging any hole for a tree planting, call 811 (or visit call811.com) at least 3 business days before you plan to dig. Your utility companies will come out and mark the locations of underground gas, electric, water, sewer, and telecommunications lines with colored flags or paint. This is a free service required by federal law, and it could save your life — hitting an unmarked gas line with a shovel is immediately life-threatening, and hitting buried electric can be fatal. In many states, failure to call 811 before digging and damaging a utility line makes the digger legally liable for all repair costs, which can run tens of thousands of dollars for fiber optic or gas line repairs. No tree is worth that risk — make the call first.
Plant the Tree So the Root Flare Is at or Slightly Above Grade — Not Below
The root flare is where the trunk widens and transitions into the root system at the base of the tree. It should be at soil level or 1–2 inches above when planted — never below grade. The most common planting mistake is digging the hole and then planting the tree at the depth it was in the nursery container or rootball, without realizing that potted trees are often planted too deep in their containers. Before planting, clear any excess soil or mulch from the top of the rootball until you find the root flare, then plant at that depth. Trees planted with the root flare buried even 4–6 inches below grade develop girdling roots (roots that circle the trunk), bark decay at the buried collar, and susceptibility to Phytophthora root rot. These problems typically take 10–20 years to manifest and then kill the tree just as it’s reaching its potential.
Don’t Stake Trees Unless Absolutely Necessary — Trees Need to Sway to Build Strong Trunks
The standard nursery practice of staking every tree is increasingly questioned by arborists and tree researchers. Trees develop strong, tapered trunks and deep anchoring roots in response to mechanical stress — when wind causes them to flex and sway, the trunk adds caliper (girth) exactly where it’s needed. Trees staked too rigidly for too long develop thin, whippy trunks that are structurally weak when the stake is finally removed. The current ISA (International Society of Arboriculture) guidance: stake only trees that cannot stand upright on their own without support, use the loosest possible tie material (never wire through a hose), and remove stakes after the first growing season (12 months maximum). If you’re planting in a very windy exposed site, a single flexible stake at 18–24 inches above grade — allowing the tree to sway above the tie point — is better than two rigid stakes that immobilize the entire trunk.
