The other step every stucco calculator skips is the opening deduction. A 20×10-ft wall is 200 gross square feet, but two 3×4-ft windows and a 3×7-ft door remove 45 square feet from the stucco area. That is 45 square feet where stucco does not go — which at the 3-coat coverage rates translates to about 2 fewer scratch coat bags, 2 fewer brown coat bags, and 1 fewer finish coat bag. Wait at Least 48 Hours Between the Scratch Coat and Brown Coat
The scratch coat must reach adequate strength before the brown coat is applied on top. If the brown coat is applied too early, the weight and moisture of the fresh brown coat can cause the scratch coat to delaminate from the wire lath — pulling free from the substrate in sheets. Install Control Joints — Stucco Cracks Without Them
